This week’s lessons will focus on addition and subtraction. 5 year olds are typically being exposed to addition and subtraction concepts with concrete, hands-on activities. Providing hands-on exposure to math concepts will help your child truly understand mathematical concepts. Be sure to use counters (food, sweet treats and money always seems to work well), play games, relate math to everyday tasks and find ways to solve problems together. The objective this week is not to teach your child how to solve written addition and subtraction problems. The goal is to help your child understand the process of putting 2 small groups of objects together to make a larger group, and taking away from that larger group-leaving fewer objects than before.
