Dissolving sugar

Fill 2 cups of water. Have your child pour sugar in the first cup, sand in the second cup. Help your child mix both and watch the results. The sugar dissolves and the sand will settle. Why does this happen? Where does the sugar go? Discuss “mixtures.” Just because you can’t see the sugar doesn’t mean it’s not there.
